Walk On gait training

Walk On was brilliant yet again. Fantastic week spent up in Sydney with the extraordinary trainers at Walk On. Issy worked her butt off 2 hours each day retraining her nervous system, building her core strength, activating muscles below her point of injury and developing their functional strength. She worked with a different trainer each day, and each of them inspired Issy to do her best and to work hard. Issy’s stamina was greatly improved since she was there 12 months ago. Kierre and Alana who worked with Issy last year both noted that she had significantly improved her core strength, her back was straighter, her legs stronger - in particular her hip flexors and quads were activating with more strength. Issy could feel the difference too and she thrived in the positive happy atmosphere of hard work. The trainers threw in more challenging exercises for Issy to work on including gait training and it was really interesting to see how well Issy managed this training which she clearly enjoyed.
Without doubt Issy came back to Walk On in good physical form having worked hard with Njala & Jenni ( yoga teachers ) Suzy ( physio) and Craig Harper( conditioning trainer). Each of the various types of training building upon the other. Issy’s biggest challenge really at the moment is holding on to the gains she has made, as she goes back to school and sits for ridiculously long periods at school. The sitting for long periods plays havoc with essential body systems – circulatory, immunity, digestive and undermines the flexibility of Issy’s leg muscles. – Good news though is the standing wheelchair which has been out of action has been fixed so hopefully Issy can use that again more frequently at school to diminish the side effects of long sitting.
Thank you to everyone who helped Issy get to Walk On. We hope to do another 2 weeks before Christmas and then in January – fingers crossed she gets to participate in the brand new Melbourne Walk On down at Whitten Oval.
